The archaeological site of San Martino owes its origins to the high and strategic position of the place. Studies by archaeologists have brought to light what was initially a likely place of votive worship as early as the Iron Age from the 5th-1st century BC. In the following Roman age, the function of the sanctuary was strengthened with the construction of other more articulated structures, this until the end of the third century AD, then they were built on the top of the structures used for housing that seem to be contemporary with the remains of the fortified wall, thus becoming a fortified settlement. In an underlying terrace, excavations have uncovered an early-medieval settlement with a small church of probably Lombard or Carolingian era dated approximately to the 8th-9th century AD.
