Dinosaur Footprints

Discover dinosaur footprints in a prehistoric landscape!
  • A view of the "hellish" landscape of the Lavini di Marco
  • Guided tours with experts from the Civic Museum of Rovereto
  • The "Strada degli Artiglieri", dedicated to the fallen of the Great War

Did you know that just above Rovereto lies the largest site of fossilized dinosaur footprints ever discovered in Italy? It is a unique experience that can be enjoyed independently or accompanied by experts from the Civic Museum of Rovereto during guided tours.

How to get there: From Rovereto, go up to the Castel Dante Ossuary and follow the "Strada degli Artiglieri" until you reach the Baita degli Alpini (parking area). From here, walk back along the road to the start of the dinosaur trail. In about 30 minutes, you will reach the dinosaur footprints, clearly visible on a steep rock slab.

The surrounding environment is breathtaking, made of massive rocks, slopes, and boulders that collapsed in ancient times—the famous Lavini di Marco, also mentioned by Dante in the Divine Comedy. The area is arid and sunny; therefore, in the summer, we recommend bringing water, especially if visiting with children.

The tracks are divided into two main groups: carnivores and herbivores. Many footprints left by herbivorous dinosaurs are in an excellent state of preservation, making it easy to recognize the animal's sequential steps in what was once mud.
