‘The Melino's Battle’ Itinerary (short route) – The Great War itineraries
A relatively easy circular hike that retraces the grooves left by the trenches once occupied by the Italian Army, leading to the barracks on the southern flank of the Monte Melino mountain.
More than a century has passed since combat took place on the Monte Melino mountain: on one side, the defence of a thousand-year-old border; on the other side, the attempt to break through the defence lines. The Italian Army led the attack, while the Austro-Hungarian troops fought in defence.
The route runs through woods and meadows near the Monte Melino summit and leads to the Italian posts located close to the top. The itinerary presents no technical difficulties and involves no particular physical effort. Over a distance of 7 kilometres, the elevation gain is less than 300 metres.
The hike initially follows a forest road and then an easy, well-signposted path running alongside the Italian trenches until it reaches the stone barracks.
