The path of the "pitores"

At the entrance of Val di Dona, the haymaking valley, where the inhabitants of Mazzin moved because of its vast stretches of meadows and nature.

Between steep ascents and open stretches, you will move through the villages of Mazzin and Fontanazzo which, together with Campestrin, located in the narrowest part of the valley, are the least extensive among all the Fassa villages. They develop along the course of the Udai stream, perpendicular to the Avisio, at the foot of Val Udai and Val di Dona from where extraordinary walks start. From Mazzin came the "pitores", decorative artisans who emigrated seasonally in search of work to other countries of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. They decorated with frescoes the walls of houses, but also furniture, doors and utensils with Ladin floral and geometric motifs, using few colors, among which stood out a particular cobalt blue, still called in German FassanerBlau. It is always here, on the left bank of the Avisio, that some of the oldest remains of the Rhaetian populations in the valley were found, now preserved in the Ladin Museum of Fascia, including even those of an ancient fortress.
