Anti-rabies vaccinations are not mandatory for dogs and cats that move around within the Italian territory, although it is advisable - and sometimes required by airlines or shipping companies.
The Ministry of Health suggests - in Northern Italy and in humid and flat areas like the Po Valley - protecting the dog against cardiopulmonary filariasis, a widespread and harmful disease, which can be prevented by giving the dog specific capsules.
