Ladin Carnival of Campitello
An unmissable festival in the square of Campitello, a dive into the traditions of Val di Fassa, where every mask tells a story and every laugh becomes a precious memory
Carnival in Val di Fassa is an explosion of colour, tradition and joy. The most eagerly awaited event is the grand Carnival parade in Campitello, held on the Sunday before Shrove Tuesday. The procession sets off from the central square "Piaz de Ciampedel" with the triumphant arrival of the "Grop de la Mescrès de Ciampedèl", the iconic group that embodies the spirit of Ladin Carnival: "Laché", "Bufon" and "Marascons", wearing richly decorated costumes that are truly unique across the entire Alpine region.
Then the parade unfolds: masks, allegorical floats, music, jokes and laughter fill the streets of the village centre. The main characters wear the traditional "facères da bel e da burt" - extraordinary wooden masks hand-carved by skilled local artisans. Some depict elegant, smiling faces; others show grotesque, exaggerated expressions. Yet they all share the same power: telling stories and preserving the cultural heritage of Val di Fassa.
This year's theme is inspired by the Olympic Games and winter sports, with many playful references to snow, competition and athletic spirit.
The parade is not just something to watch - it is an experience to be lived. Improvised sketches, Ladin wordplay and unexpected surprises sweep the audience up in the contagious energy of Carnival. And all around… irresistible aromas fill the air: grilled sausages, golden crispy fortae (traditional fried pastries) and freshly made apple fritters. Join us and celebrate Carnival together!
