SIX FRIENDS FOR BICIO "Tribute to Maurizio Caldura Núñez" - Dolomiti Ski Jazz
Tribute by Six Friends for Bicio to the saxophonist Maurizio Caldura Núñez (1959 - 1998).
Six Friends for Bicio is a project dedicated to saxophonist Maurizio Caldura Núñez, known as “Bicio” to his friends, who passed away prematurely in 1998 and is considered by many as one of the most talented Italian saxophonists of all time. This tribute was strongly wanted by pianist Marcello Tonolo, his dear friend, to ensure that his music would never be forgotten. The two jazz musicians had founded the Thelonious Monk music school in Dolo (later moved to Mira) and shared records and important stages, including in the United States. The project was enthusiastically joined by Michele Polga, a prominent Italian jazz saxophonist, perhaps Caldura’s best student, who was also an extraordinary educator. Polga dedicated the beautiful ballad “Núñez Dance” to his mentor, which is part of the sextet’s repertoire, which, for the rest, will perform only compositions by the late saxophonist. The group also includes, alongside Polga and Tonolo, who was the pianist in Caldura's last important sextet, trombonist Roberto Rossi and double bassist Marc Abrams, two other members of the original sextet. Taking the place of the unforgettable Marco Tamburini on trumpet is the Ligurian trumpeter Giampaolo Casati – who was Caldura's first substitute at the time – and drummer Enrico Smiderle.
Maurizio Caldura Núñez (1959–1998) was an Italian jazz saxophonist – a specialist in tenor, but also played soprano and alto – who grew up musically in Mestre, known for his work with many important Italian jazz groups of the 1980s and 1990s. He played for several years in Giorgio Gaslini’s group, collaborated extensively with singer Tiziana Ghiglioni, and was a member of ensembles like Keptorchestra – an extraordinary big band he founded with Pietro and Marcello Tonolo, collaborating with Lee Konitz, Steve Lacy, and Joe Lovano, recording with the latter two on the albums Sweet Sixteen and Miss Etna – and the Matt Jazz Quintet, where he shared leadership with pianist Luca Flores. He released albums as a leader for Caligola Records, Static Energy and Murrina Latina. He founded the Thelonious Monk music school in Dolo with Marcello Tonolo, one of the first and most important music schools in Veneto, still active today in Mira.
