Stagione teatrale di Fiemme
Show "Giovanna dei disoccupati. A Brechtian Apocryphal" by Centro teatrale Bresciano - Emilia Romagna Teatro - Teatro Stabile di Bolzano - Corvini Produzioni
Obviously, we cannot imagine what Bertolt Brecht would write if he were among us and looked around; if he lived, like us, immersed in our culture, eighty years after the end of the Nazi horrors, within a much more complex and layered economy and finance. And yet… Yet those horrors are unfortunately current, in different forms and just a stone's throw away from us. Yet in finance, prevarication, hypocrisy, and the exploitation of the unfortunate seem reluctant to leave the scene, striking with sharper and more insidious weapons.
In our Joan of the Unemployed we have allowed the characters imagined by Brecht to act in new domains and with new words, but again immersed in the terrain of dominance and subservience. The algorithm may seem less evil to us, but in the end, it turns out to be as wicked and cruel as a flesh-and-blood master. Multinational corporations have no masters and continue to prevail, wound, and attack the weakest, in all countries. Goods travel more freely than humans, and the incitement to consume gives the impression of a liturgy beneficial to everyone except for us. Poverty and hunger are dramatically real. The economic rite that pushes consumers to consume more and those who suffer to suffer more is increasingly celebrated.
And then there are the people: millions of individuals who are more and more isolated, increasingly oppressed by the commercial-advertising-social world that is completing the massacre of communities. In the empyrean of monads, the economic superman emerges, devoid of true thought, lacking intellectual excellence, without artistic depth, simply a perfect money-making machine. We will witness the tales of Pierpont Mauler, his subordinates, Cridle, Slift, the greatest lobbyist of the moment: the terrible Graham; a world of magnates opposed by Joan Darko, with her social-socialist community.
But is an online community really a community? Is it not once again a multitude of monads telling themselves the dream of the tribe? This, perhaps, is the true drama.
With all due humility, we present to you this apocryphal work of Bertolt Brecht, imagining we have written it under dictation. This is possible only with the help of the immutable art of theater which, while entertaining us, as Gramsci said, attempts to drop bombs in our brains.
