Walk the defensive walls, looking out at the broad valle dell’Adige below. Visit rooms used for baking bread. Descend into kitchens and cellars and try on helmets, shields, and armour to feel like a 15th century warrior. Castel Beseno is the ideal place to learn about life in a Renaissance fortress.
Dominating the hilltop since the 12th century, in 1487 it was at the centre of the Battle of Calliano, a turning point in the war between Venetian troops and Trentino and Tyrol warriors (recreated in a number of immersive rooms). Castel Beseno is now a much-visited attraction. It houses museum collections, temporary exhibitions, and a rich programme of events and activities appealing especially to children and historical re-enactment fans.
