Palazzo Taddei
It is the oldest palace in Ala: in 1810 the leader of the South Tyrolean revolt Andreas Hofer stopped within these walls, on his way to Mantua, where he was executed by the French.
The family of the Taddei barons, originally from Florence, arrived in Ala from Verona with the support of the Castelbarco family at the end of the 1300s. Among the first to carry out commercial and entrepreneurial activities, Giovanbrunone Taddei started the manufacture of velvet in these rooms in the mid-seventeenth century. Palazzo Taddei - in the ancient street of Villanova, in the historic centre of Ala - today testifies to the vitality of the foreign class of the past, the only one that could afford to build or enlarge their homes. Its simple and austere façade, with a square portal and symmetrical windows with an identical design, was a symbol of strength and power in society. Contrast this severity with the façade on the inner courtyard, where an ancient 16th-century well in worked stone dominates.
