Torre Aquila - Buonconsiglio Castle
The Torre Aquila is one of the most important historical-artistic gems of Trento and represents an extraordinary testimony of the medieval and late Gothic era of the city. Located at the eastern end of the city walls, it is incorporated into the architectural complex of the Castello del Buonconsiglio, the historic residence of the Prince-Bishops of Trento
Originally a watchtower and gateway to the city, Torre Aquila was transformed into a refined decorative space thanks to the will of Prince-Bishop George of Liechtenstein, who at the end of the 14th century commissioned the famous interior decoration.
The real treasure kept in the tower is in fact the famous Cycle of Months, an exceptional cycle of Gothic frescoes created between the end of the 14th century and the beginning of the 15th century. The frescoes represent one of the most important examples of medieval secular painting in Europe: month by month, they tell the life, customs, agricultural activities, hunting, festivals and customs of the nobility and people of the time, in an extraordinary succession of lively and detailed scenes that return an authentic "photograph" of the Late Alpine Middle Ages.
Today Torre Aquila can be visited as part of the Buonconsiglio Castle museum tour. The visit allows you to admire these precious frescoes up close, appreciate their details and immerse yourself in a fascinating journey through time.
The tower can be reached through a suggestive walkway on the walls, from which you can also enjoy a beautiful view of the city and its surroundings.
Attention! To know when you can visit Torre Aquila, you must refer directly to the Castello del Buonconsiglio.
