Galleria di Cavento #1

Initially dug out by the Habsburg army, the cave passed hands several times between the Austrians and Italians over the course of the tragic events, as has been well documented by those who fought here.
Ninety years later, a joint initiative between the Autonomous Province of Trento and the Trentino Alpini Society, in particular the Historical Commission along with the land registry of artificial caverns (literally) broke the ice covering this vast underground complex, revealing a vast assortment of structures and relics, which can be seen in the exact position they were left in over ninety years ago, when the last soldiers occupying the site descended into the valleys.
This outstanding testimony, unique for this period of history, has been thoroughly researched also by archaeologists and speleologists, and considerable resources have been invested
Work on the tunnels was completed last summer, and the site is now open to visitors who have some experience of walking at high altitude and are accompanied by a mountain guide.
