ITRS - International Trail Rating System

The ITRS is an objective methodology for classifying trails from a biker's perspective by evaluating four aspects:

    ·         Technical difficulty: required skill level

    ·         Shape: combined effect of length, ascent, and descent

    ·         Wilderness factor: necessary planning considering phone reception, rescue options, water supply, and wildlife

    ·         Exposure: consequences of a possible fall

Learn more about the ITRS system and check the classification of this itinerary in the photo gallery.

    Safety Tips

    1.         Always wear a helmet.

    2.        Plan your outing.

    3.        Trails are shared with other users. Always give way to pedestrians.

    4.       Control your speed according to your experience.

    5.        Ride slowly on crowded trails, overtake politely and respectfully.

    6.       Never leave marked trails, do not ride closed paths.

    7.        Avoid trails when muddy to prevent further damage.

    8.       Respect public and private property.

    9.       Always be self-sufficient.

    10.     Do not travel alone in isolated areas.

The first stretch of the route that leads from the green meadows of Passo Bordala to the Somator Refuge is characterized by a false flat, while the last stretch, about half a kilometer, becomes a bit more challenging but in no time you reach the refuge, a place for a refreshing break for both adults and children, the latter can enjoy the beautiful days playing in the playground surrounded by the greenery of the mountains of the Val di Gresta.

After the right recharge, it's time to return to the starting point and head down, which will quickly reach Passo Bordala.

    Equipment

Bicycle excursions require specific clothing and equipment. Even on relatively short and easy rides, it is always better to be well equipped to avoid unpleasant surprises and to face unforeseen events such as, for example, a sudden storm or a drop in energy: even unexpected events are part of the fun!

Also remember to carefully assess the type of route you are taking, the locations you plan to cross, and the current season. Has it rained? Be careful! The paths will be more slippery and therefore you need to be more cautious.

What to bring with you during a bike excursion?

    • adequate water supply according to your needs (consider temperature, supply possibilities, route duration)
    • snacks (for example, dried fruit or bars)
    • wind and rain jacket
    • spare shirt and socks
    • sunscreen
    • sunglasses
    • bike gloves
    • map or GPS device
    • torch preferably for helmet or handlebar (an unforeseen event or technical failure can extend the excursion time)
    • first aid kit
    • bike repair kit for mechanical breakdowns
    • whistle for signaling

Always let someone know where you’re headed and how long you expect your excursion to last.

The universal emergency number is 112.
