Magnificent ski mountaineering itinerary in a wild and spectacular environment. The first part is easy but long as it follows the forest road and the slopes on the right bank of the Rivo delle Stue. At the end, however, it follows the superb and captivating northwest ridge of Cimon delle Stellune, which requires some skill and sure footing with an ice axe and crampons. Therefore, this is a route suitable for good ski mountaineers. The view from the summit is truly stunning.

    Safety information

Always check the avalanche bulletin and assess the snow cover conditions on site.

Particular attention should be paid to the stretch leading to the Forcella di Val Moena and the final slope to the summit, where a careful evaluation of snow cover consistency is necessary.

The long section on the ridge is not a stroll. Watch out for possible cornices.

In conditions of low-altitude snow cover, you must start from loc Zocchi, located on the lower road at 1132m elevation.

As you can imagine, the passability of trails in a mountain environment is closely linked to current conditions and therefore depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes, and weather conditions. For this reason, the information contained in this sheet may have changed. Before setting off, inquire about the state of the route by contacting the refuge managers along your route, alpine guides, visitor centers of natural parks, and tourist offices.

    Roadbook

Just before loc Ponte delle Stue (1240m), take the forest road to the left (southeast direction) that climbs the right bank of the Rio delle Stue following the signs “Malga Cazzorga – Lago delle Stellune” – trail 318.

Continue along the forest road through the valley, ignoring other forks. In this way, you will pass respectively: Malga Stue Bassa (1458m); Malga Stue Alta (1560m) and Malga Cazzorga (1845m) where the road ends.

From the hut, continue uphill east, northeast overcoming a rise in the woods without a fixed path (approximately along the route of summer trail 318 SAT).

You will reach the above meadows of Malga Stellune (1976m) from where, with a short climb always east, northeast, you go up to the beautiful basin of Lago delle Stellune (2091m).

Once on the plain, continue straight into the valley without going to the lake (which remains slightly lower on the right) to bypass a visible ridge leaving it on your left.

Then veer left (north) to climb the slope on rather steep ground and, with several changes of direction, reach the Forcella di Val Moéna (2294m) which closes the west ridge of Cima delle Stellune.

From the pass continue to the right (northeast – steep attention), to flank the basal slopes at the foot of the west side of Cima della Stellune. This leads you to the beginning of the northwest ridge of Cima delle Stellune, where the steep slope leading to the summit section starts. The exact point is identified by a plaque on a rock labeled “Sentiero Don Martino Delugan”.

Here put on crampons and ice axe and strap skis on your backpack. Start climbing the first ramp section with a very short stretch with a slope of about 35° - 40°.

Following the terrain’s logic continue climbing on the slope which gradually becomes gentler and reach the summit plateau. Put your skis on again and continue to the visible and aesthetic summit (2605m) surpassing a short steep section (30°).

Return by the ascent route, paying close attention on the steep and technical stretch (which is traveled almost always with ice axe and crampons worn).

    Directions

Reach Castello di Fiemme via the SS48 Val di Fiemme or the SS612 coming from Val di Cembra. Head to the Fiemme valley floor near Molina di Fiemme and from there continue to Passo del Manghen along Val Cadino. Continue uphill towards the pass until you reach the locality Zocchi (forest house on the right - 1132m) where you park. You can often drive by car up to the Ponte delle Stue (1240m – about 1.5 km further) avoiding the first part along the road. For information on the passability of the Passo Manghen road call 0462.341332 (Bar Ristorante Pineta).
