Tips and suggestions
At lake Smeraldo there are two establishments where you can stop for a snack or lunch: the Hotel Lago Smeraldo and the Restaurant Pizzeria Folon. Picnic tables are also located by the lake. Via the short ravine walk, it is possible to reach the village centre of Fondo, where you can take advantage of all the other facilities.
Roadbook
Once in the village of Fondo, follow the directions to Lake Smeraldo. Upon reaching the lake, near the car park next to the 'Lago Smeraldo' hotel, follow the signs for the Botanical Garden (route no. 10). The beginning of the walk is easy to recognise because it starts from a wooden staircase alongside the road. A fifteen-minute walk takes you to the Fondo Botanical Garden, which is only open in the summer months. This is where the actual Heather Route begins, a ring-route through the forest and along the northern side of Lake Smeraldo. The walk is 3 km long in total, with an enchanting scenic viewpoint halfway along, and takes you back to the starting point in about an hour.
