SAT / E225 - Sentiero dei Piani
Interesting but long and tiring path that climbs from Caldonazzo up to Monte Cimone by ascending the rugged and wooded northern slope of the hill. It is locally known as Via dei Piani, but the flat sections are few and short. In the middle part of the route, spectacular panoramic views open onto the lakes of Caldonazzo and Levico and the Upper Valsugana. It is recommended to combine the excursion by taking the SAT 222 trail from Tamazòl uphill and the Sentiero dei Piani downhill.
We take the trail on the south side of the road junction, at the Caldonazzo Pine Forest. We climb southeast alongside a vineyard to enter the dense forest after just a few minutes, on a path initially easy that later becomes steeper. It crosses repeatedly, and partly follows, a forest road that coincides with the Peace Trail. The path continues steeply through mixed woods and again crosses the Peace Trail at a panoramic hairpin bend overlooking the town of Caldonazzo with the lake and the entire green valley. After a short stretch, we leave the Peace Trail to the right, for which you could reach, in about 10 minutes, the nearby viewpoint called Polsa del Vescovo. The path now rises to the left, along a sunny ridge while the climb becomes harder and more challenging, the environment becomes wilder and at the same time more panoramic. At an altitude of 1170 m, the path returns to the forest and continues quite linearly through narrow natural valleys, among conifers and dwarf pines, until it reaches the large iron cross placed on the wooded summit of Monte Cimone where the SAT 220 and 222 trails also converge.
