Peace Path 25: From Monterovere hotel to Caldonazzo

Easy stage, a transfer, with which we leave the plateaus to descend into Valsugana. Worth noting is the visit to the Austrian military museum of Slaghenaufi and the artistic route of the Breath of the Trees.

From the Monte Rovere hotel we take the paved road north, keeping right at the junction shortly after. Then we enter the forest road on the left and follow it in the woods, with a slight ascent. Upon reaching the intersection with trail 223, it is worth making a detour to visit the Austrian military cemetery of Slaghenaufi, preceded by some panels and a votive chapel; over 700 fallen rest here and each has a wooden cross - it is a place of strong emotional impact.

Back at the intersection, we take trail 223, still on a comfortable forest road, then continue on 224 (alternatively, those who want to save some distance can cut through the forest road running along the southern slopes of Monte Cimon from here, rejoining the Peace Path and cutting about 4 km). We pass the hamlet of Stèngheli and shortly after take the land art route of the “Breath of the Trees,” which boasts numerous wooden installations dedicated to trees. Then, on the western side of Dosso del Monco (just before the junction with the cut mentioned above), the forest road becomes a path and the first views open onto the underlying Valsugana.

We comfortably lose altitude on the easy trail, with an excellent view of Lake Caldonazzo. We intersect trail 225, which cuts across the hairpin bends; here the trail returns to a forest road, and further down the surface becomes asphalted. Once reaching the valley floor, we cross the Centa stream on a bridge and shortly after enter the beautiful historic center of Caldonazzo.

Note: At km 9.9 of the track (where the long descent to Caldonazzo begins) the more athletic can, if they wish, take trail 222 on the right to climb up to Monte Cimon; from the summit, following 225, a very steep descent of about 600 meters leads back to the original track. This variant offers some interesting views of the Laresi Valley, but the descent must be considered EE (exposed and demanding), due to steepness and slippery ground.
