Discovering the Largà
For centuries, the forests of Trentino have provided the mountain people with timber to build their homes and wood for heating, as well as fruits, leaves and flowers to use as food (for both people and animals) and as remedies for various illnesses and ailments.
In recent decades, these ‘secondary’ uses have gradually disappeared, partly due to our new modern lifestyle, which sees us buying food in supermarkets and treating ourselves with products created by pharmaceutical companies.
Yet there are still forests where traditions linked to ancient and now almost forgotten practices are passed down: this is the case with the forests of Palù del Fersina, where, for some years now, the magic of Largà has returned – the precious larch resin that was, and is once again, harvested for numerous uses, not just for medicinal purposes.
On an easy hike, Paola, a local guide and forestry expert, will take you on an exploration of these woods, teaching you how to distinguish the larch from other tree species, and will tell you how the idea arose to revive this ancient practice, which still allows us to obtain the ‘gold of the forest’, the precious Largà.
