The mobility of people

The valley is a place to arrive and a place to return to

In the Mocheni Valley, human settlement has ancient roots: during the Middle Ages, the steep mountains and dense forests were a place of attraction, offering shelter, work, and a new chance at life. Many people moved from the southern regions of Germany and made this valley their home. A place to arrive, and from the 18th century onwards, also a place to depart from. The population grew, but resources remained scarce. Therefore, the valley began to open up: once the field work was finished, men would leave and become traveling merchants to supplement their income and support their families.
