Roots and Frontiers – ‘AL LIMITE’ Festival
AT THE EDGE is a series of meetings to reflect on the present and future of our mountains.
We are used to looking at the mountains and thinking that the boundary of the forest is a line drawn exclusively by nature. But is it really so? In this meeting, we will discover that the alpine landscape is actually a 'co-constructed' frontier, shaped over the centuries by a continuous dialogue between ecological dynamics and human choices. Historian Katia Occhi will take us back in time, revealing how the boundary of the forest has never been just a wild space, but a political and economic limit made up of pastures, usage rights, and power conflicts. Matteo Garbarino will show us how the treeline is now shifting upwards, crossing the boundary of human settlements that is instead descending due to depopulation. A journey to understand that the limit of the forest is not just an ecological barrier, but the exact point where the landscape makes our identity visible.
