This Christmas, give a basket of good things from Trentino

Stuck for Christmas gift ideas? Don’t panic: think Trentino!

Take a trip to Trento, Rovereto or Riva del Garda before the holiday season, and you’ll easily find all the presents you could wish for in the local shops. If you like the idea of exploring the area and its hidden corners, go one better and buy direct from the producers – and discover their secrets into the bargain. But even if you plan to take it easy in your home town this year, you can still order online and have it all delivered to your door in time for the celebrations to begin! Here, then, are our top tips for some great festive gifts from Trentino.

Honey

The rhododendron is one of the iconic blooms of the Dolomites, and its honey is something special. The bees fill their boots, and our apiarists follow them up the mountains in summer to bring you a dense, clear honey full of sunshine flavour. Two producers to try are Apis Labor in Primiero – a recent winner of the 3 Gocce d’Oro award precisely for their rhodo honey – and Mieli Thun from the Val di Non.

EVO Olive Oil from Lake Garda

Did you know that Trentino has the northernmost olive groves in Europe? These prized varieties by the banks of Lake Garda yield an EVO as delicate as it is elegant. You can buy some from the Agraria cooperative shop in Riva or from other local producers like Olio Cru and Madonna delle Vittorie in Arco.

Trentodoc sparkling wine

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without fizz. And Trentino has no less than 57 wineries that make Trentodoc sparkling wine using the classic method. From famous labels to niche producers, from white to rosé and vintage to reserve, you’re truly spoiled for choice. And the Trento Doc institute assures the quality of every bottle. Discover the bubbly from the mountains.

Grappas and locally produced gin

Berry liqueurs, locally made gin, spirits distilled from herbs. Single-cultivar grappas from indigenous grapes like Nosiola, Teroldego or Marzemino. They all make fantastic presents that are sure to go down well, especially when shared in good company by a roaring fire.

Homemade jams

Jam is a classic Christmas gift. If you missed the “Trentino in un Barattolo” (Trentino in a jar) event at our agritourisms, fear not – the very same jams and preserves are still available for purchase. And, naturally, they are made with choice local ingredients from figs to rose petals; there’s even a strudel flavour! Take home a delicious helping of Trentino mountain sweetness.

Pasta from Val di Fiemme

Your basket of treats would hardly be complete without pasta. Award-winning Felicetti single-grain pasta makes a beautifully presented gift. It is made with pure spring water from the Val di Fiemme for a unique flavour that is a joy to discover.

Delicious coffee

Coffee isn’t a crop that grows in Trentino, of course, but the bean roaster’s art is taking root here. There are already 5 companies making high-quality, interesting products, from Caffè Adler based in Lavis to Casa del Caffè in the heart of Trento and Omkafé in Riva del Garda. Bontadi from Rovereto, founded back in 1790, is the oldest of them all.

Artisanal Panettone

And we haven’t even mentioned traditional Christmas cakes yet! Panettone – strictly artisanal – is a growing trend on Trentino festive tables. Panificio Moderno is famed for its soft, fragrant panettoni with chocolate drops or coffee.
Exquisita in Rovereto stands out for its flavourful panettoni made with San Martim raisin wine. And a variety with Dro plums and extra virgin Garda olive oil is a firm favourite from Agraria cooperative shop in Riva.

Teas, fragrances and essences from the mountains

The herbs and flowers of Trentino star in numerous products and ingredients from infusions to aromatised salt. Discover the produce of farms in such Eden-like spots as Primiero (Erborì), the Val di Non (l’Essenza del Bosco) and the Val di Fassa (Agriturismo Fiores). If you like essential oils and room fragrances, you’ll love the Magnifica Essenza range from the Val di Fiemme; they’ll infuse your home with the aromas of the Trentino woods.

Body care from nature

To conclude, a Christmas gift classic: cosmetics and personal care. Trentino has a wide array of all-natural products to suit every taste, like Acqua Levico mineral water or creams enriched with the skin-friendly Spa waters of Terme di Comano. Then there are the Agrilife creams and lotions made with donkey milk, a super-rich source of nutrients, and the edelweiss facial-care range by Olga Casanova, which grows its flowers in the heart of Stelvio National Park.
