Burning March
An ancient tradition of pagan origin rich in meanings: with fire, we burn the bad season and, at the same time, the warmth of the flames warms Mother Earth.
In summary, it is a ritual of fertility and abundance. The great fire represents the pinnacle of a series of events that begin several days earlier when young people roam the streets of the village with noisemaking instruments (usually cowbells), collecting firewood from families to prepare the large pile. In this case, the cowbells serve to awaken Mother Nature, and the wood offered by each family represents a personal "sacrifice" to ensure the success of the ritual.
The warmth of the flames warmed Mother Nature (the earth) while simultaneously burning the bad season. In Lusérn, each district would light its "martzo," and all the villagers would participate in the event to celebrate the end of the harsh winter, singing and telling stories around the bonfire.
Today, as in the past, on the hill above the village, known as Kraütz, the lighting of the bonfire takes place on the last Saturday of February, involving the entire community.
This ancient tradition is repeated every year in the small village of Lusérn, where time has stood still, where the ancient Cimbrian language is spoken, and where the boundary between legends and reality is difficult to comprehend for those immersed in the frenzy of modern life.
To experience this beautiful tradition, feel part of a community that shares its most genuine moments with tourists, and live an experience that is truly unique.
